Girls track finishes 5th in cold, rainy meet
by Norv and Mary Coblentz · Sports · May 04, 2017

The West Branch girls got in a meet at Wayland during a cold and rainy stretch of weather on April 27. In a two-class meet at WACO, the Bears participated in the larger of the two classes and placed fifth of six teams.

Team scores: 1) Mt. Pleasant 173, 2) Fairfield 138, 3) Mediapolis 94, 4) Keokuk 83.50, 5) West Branch 60, 6) Washington 36.50

“The girls finished with two first-place finishes, two second-place finishes, and one third-place finish,” West Branch Co-head Coach Carol Lumpa said. “The girls finished with six season bests despite the chilly night. This was the first meet that the girls had to wear their tights.

“Two of the relays that we are putting together for districts were our first-place finishes. Paige Miller had a nice lead over the best competition she had seen all year (in the 400m hurdles), then took a tumble going over the sixth hurdle and still finished in fourth place (with a time of 1:12.44). It just made her hungry to get back out there.”

This week, the Bears have two meets: they traveled to Monticello on May 2 and then will head to the River Valley Conference meet at Bellevue May 4. “The conference meet is dubbed the mini state meet, and if you can finish in the top three or four in any event, you have done really well,” Lumpa said. “We will be ready to compete.”

Miller ran the 400m hurdles at the Drake Relays April 29.

“Paige Miller ran a 1:08.55 in the 400 hurdles at the Drake Relays on Saturday,” Lumpa said. “She finished 14th out of 16 runners. The weather was terrible (with) cold, wind and rain. I was glad she ran the race clean and didn’t get hurt. We will hope for better weather when we head back to state track (at Drake Stadium) in three weeks.”

Haley Mullinnix had a fifth-place finish in the 100m dash at WACO. Her time was 14.58. Grace Kerchner finished in 16.50.

Taylor Thein finished the 200m dash in 30.34. Mullinnix was fifth in 29.59. Lexie Whede ran the 400m dash in 1:17.09, a season-best time. Kerchner finished in 1:21.11.

Aubrey Baylor finished the 100m hurdles in 19.57.

Taylor Boelk finished the 800m run with a time of 2:52.50, a season-best time. Aurora Eilertsen also turned in a season-best time in the race - 2:58.29.

In the field events, Mikayla Prusha was third in the high jump, jumping 4-04.

Tatum Koenig was fifth and Thein sixth in the long jump with jumps of 15-03 and 14-07.50, respectively.

Kaylee Montgomery was fifth in the discus with a throw of 87-11, a season-best effort. Mackenzie Heise had a throw of 84-06.

Heise took fifth place in the shot put, putting the shot 31-3.75. Montgomery was sixth, putting the shot 27-07.50.

The same four athletes teamed up for both of the Bears’ first-place relay races. Koenig, Jaylen Votroubek, Kaija Luneckas, and Miller won the shuttle hurdle relay race with a time of 1:11.36. The same girls teamed up for a win in the 4x200 with a time of 1:51.59.

Thein, Votroubek, Luneckas, and Miller placed second in the sprint medley. Their time was 1:59.40.

Koenig, Votroubek, Luneckas, and Mullinnix finished second in the 4x400 with a time of 4:21.34.

The 4x100 team of Thein, Riley Vaughan, Baylor, and Autumn Kolpin finished in 57.26.

The distance medley team of Vaughan, Kolpin, Baylor, and Clare Muckler had a time of 5:10.34, a season-best time.
