Girls earn fourth of 13 teams at invitational

The West Branch girls track and field team placed fourth of 13 teams at the West Liberty Invitational April 4.

“The girls had a really good night,” West Branch Co-head Coach Carol Lumpa said. “The coaches talk a lot about improving each week of the season so we can get to where we want to be by the end. Well, last night the girls did just that with 13 season-best times, jumps and throws.”

Paige Miller broke the meet record in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 1:06.88. “She is dominating that event right now,” Lumpa said.

Tatum Koenig won the long jump with a season-best jump of 15-07. Taylor Thein had a jump of 13-09.75, and Haley Mullinnix had a jump of 13-00.50.

Koenig and Miller teamed up with Thein and Kaiya Luneckas to win the 4x200 in season-best time of 1:52.93.

Koenig, Luneckas, Jaylen Votroubek and Miller ran a season-best time of 4:18.47 in the 4x400 for second place, and the same girls were second in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:15.53.

“Our third-place finisher was another highlight of the meet,” Lumpa said. “Mikayla Prusha cleared 5-00 for the first time (in the high jump).”

The sprint medley team of Thein, Mullinnix, Votroubek, and Luneckas had a season-best time of 2:00.77 for fourth place.

Thein, Riley Vaughan, Aubrey Baylor, and Mullinnix had a season-best time of 56.94 for sixth place in the 4x100.

Also placing sixth was Mackenzie Heise in the shot put with a season-best throw of 31-11.00. Kaylee Montgomery put the shot 25-09, and Taylor Tisinger put the shot a season-best 22-07.

The distance medley team of Vaughan, Autumn Kolpin, Taylor Boelk, and Aurora Eilertsen had a season-best time in the distance medley. Their time of 5:05.67 was good for seventh place.

In the 100m dash, Baylor finished in 15.09, and Grace Kerchner finished in a season-best time of 16.10.

In the 200m dash, Mullinnix finished in 29.99; Kolpin finished in 31.20, a season-best time; and Vaughan had a season-best time of 31.54.

Taylor Boelk finished the 800m run in 3:08.25. Lexie Whede finished the race in 4:14.25.

In the 1500m run, Clare Muckler finished in 6:18.01, and Eilertsen finished in 6:39.37.

In the discus, Heise had a throw of 69-03 in the discus. Montgomery had a throw of 62-00, and Tisinger had a season-best throw of 22-07.

The junior varsity 4x100 team of Boelk, Whede, Eilertson, and Kolpin finished in second place with a time of 1:00.35.

“We love to see the girls improve and the looks on their faces,” Lumpa said. “As long as they buy in to what we are doing in practice and the weight room, this will continue.

“We are pleased with our progress. Handoffs were good, and the girls were finishing better. Got to keep going!”



At Clear Creek-Amana

“The girls had an awesome night scoring 104.5 points for third place,” West Branch Head Coach Carol Lumpa said. “We challenged the girls to use the competition, great weather, and a fast track to get their times down. They responded with 18 season-best times, jumps, and throws. This meet was a big boost to our season. The girls are starting to get it, to believe in their conditioning and in each other.”
