Three West Branch girls basketball players received River Valley Conference All-Conference awards, several received RVC All-Conference Academic awards, and varsity letters and team awards were distributed at the awards banquet at the high school March 5.

“I’m greedy,” West Branch Head Coach Jarod Tylee said. “We had a 14-9 season, but I always want to win more games.”

Four of the Bears’ losses came to eventual state-bound teams, and the Bears lost their Regional Final game in overtime.

The RVC All-Conference players were Paige Miller, who received Honorable Mention; Haley Mullinnix, who received All-Conference honors for the fourth year; and Tatum Koenig, who was named to the RVC Elite Team for the third time.

All-Conference Academic awards went to Kaiya Luneckas, Mackenzie Heise, Taylor Thein, Abbey Fryauf, Courtney Jarrett, Riley Vaughan, Koenig, Bridget Buol, Maddi Luneckas, Manager Ashley Riley, Claire Bridges, Mullinnix, Allie Waterman, Paige Miller, and Abby Knoop.

Tylee handed out varsity letters. First year letters went to Knoop, Bridget Buol, M. Luneckas, K. Luneckas, Heiss, and Thein. Second year letters went to Bridges, Allie Waterman, Fryauf, Jarrett, Riley Vaughan, and Koenig. P. Miller and Mullinnix received fourth-year letters.

Three players received Coaches’ Appreciation Awards: Bridges, Miller, and Mullinnix. The team voted on three awards. Best team player went to Allie Waterman. Most Improved went to Fryauf and Knoop, and MVP went to Koenig who led in scoring, assists, rebounding, steals, and fouls.

Other honors received by some of the players include Iowa Girls Coaches’ Assocation All-District South to Koenig, All-Regional Class 2A Region 7 to Koenig, and the Iowa Girls Coaches’ Association First Team All-State to Koenig. Miller and Mullinnix were invited to participate in the RVC All-Star Game in Camanche March 19. Mullinnix was invited to participate in the Iowa Girls Coaches’ Association All-Star Game April 2 in Cedar Rapids.

Tylee thanked several people including the weight room people, the scoreboard people, the announcer, the bus drivers, the school administration, the parents, Dana Arp for doing the scorebook, Brad and Nikki Koenig, his family, the players, and the manager. Tylee noted that he and his coaching staff are three wins away from 100 wins in what will likely be (barring disaster) just over six years of coaching.

Junior varsity head coach Ted Miller encouraged his team to work on their game in the off-season. He also thanked coaches Tony Luneckas, B. Koenig, Tylee, and Rick Sexton for their help. He thanked the bus driver, the people who kept the books, and the manager for helping get ready for the games.

Participation certificates were given to Abbie Waterman, Aubrey Baylor, Hope Evans, Maddie DeJong, Mattie Hills, Olivia Schultes, and Taylor Boelk. Several others on the JV team received varsity letters.

“I was really happy with the season,” Miller said. “We had a 10-11 record. We keep getting better and better. I’ve never really had a team like this before, asking (frequently) what they can do to improve. They want to get better.”

The JV team voted on three awards. Most Improved went to Boelk. Best Team Player went to M. Luneckas, and Taylor Thein received MVP.
