Cal McGowan, 62, Springville
Obituaries · February 09, 2017

Cal McGowan, 62, a former resident of Lone Tree, passed away the second week of January 2017 in his home near Springville, Iowa. No formal services are planned at this time.

To say that Cal marched to the beat of a different drummer would be putting it mildly. There were many events that took place in the early part of his life that would have made for pretty good reading or maybe even a made for TV movie had he chosen to relate them to the right person.

Cal was born April 9, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John and Maureen McGowan. Growing up he lived in Marion, Olin, West Liberty and West Branch, Iowa. He dropped out of high school before his junior year and did a brief stint in the U.S Army. Cal did farm work, truck driving and turned a wrench for many years as a mechanic. In his later years, he did a lot of junking and was a gifted “Picker” long before the term became a part of reality TV. He got a great deal of enjoyment out of bringing a trailer load of treasures to the auctions at the Kalona Sales Barn.

Cal is survived by beloved dog Clem; parents John and Maureen McGowan; and brothers Brad and Leif McGowan.
