Carmen “Hope” Pierce, 93, of West Liberty, Iowa, died Dec. 31, 2016, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City after a short illness.

A memorial service was held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at the First Church United in West Liberty. Inurnment was in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Church United, American Legion Auxiliary or Senior Dining. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements.

She was born July 24, 1923, to Elva and Avis (McKillip) Markham in Bloomington Township in Muscatine County, Iowa, in her grandma McKillip’s home. A 1942 graduate of Muscatine High School, Hope was best known for her volunteer work and service. She was a member and president of American Legion Auxiliary, a charter member of First Church United, a choir member, a past president of UCW, a Sunday school teacher for 30 years, a past Noble Grand and president of Rebekah’s; a Community Center planning/funding committee member, a volunteer at Senior Dining Center, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and a six-year volunteer of the Senior Resource board.

An active volunteer, she earned the State Volunteer Award and the Muscatine County Senior Resources Award.

Hope received great joy from her family, friends and traveling. She loved to crochet, donating many items, gardening, camping, reading, helping others, and, since 1955, auto racing.

Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by her husband, C. Fred Pierce; sons C. Wayne Pierce and D. Richard Moyer; grandson Curtis Moyer; sister Kelly Weger; her parents and two infant brothers.

She is survived by two daughter-in-laws, four sisters, a step brother, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Hope is much loved and will be greatly missed.
