Groups taking names for holiday food distribution
News · December 01, 2016

It’s time again for the annual Holiday Food Distribution.

Cedar County Veterans Affairs and General Assistance started Tuesday and will, through Dec. 13, accept appointments for food certificates.

A family household cannot be over 185 percent of the guidelines, and proof of income must be presented at the time of the appointment.

Families must contact the office at 563-886-2170 to set up an appointment in order to sign up — no walk-ins.

Families have until Dec. 31 to use the certificate. If you are unable to meet in person, contact the office during business hours as other arrangements may be available. A family member with necessary documentation can also sign you up.

There are many county residents that contribute to the success of this program. Each and every donation makes a difference.

“There are many families that aren’t financially eligible for so many of the programs that this is the one time a year when they qualify. They are the families that fall in the cracks and this gives them just a little something through the holiday season.” Administrator Patty Hamann said.

“Thank you to Family Foods in Tipton for participating and making this program possible,” she said.

Participants will be able to use their certificate at the store and will receive 20 percent off their purchase. Any amount above the certificate amount is still eligible for 20 percent off, but the recipient is responsible to pay for it. The recipient will be prohibited from purchasing tobacco products, alcohol, soda drinks, or deli items with this certificate or the 20 percent off. This certificate can be used on fresh fruit, meat, dairy, frozen, or canned food items.

This program is successful only through the support of donations from residents and businesses, Hamann said.

“There are tough times in front of us, and now more than ever, there is a need to help families and seniors in the county,” she said.

If you would be interested in making a financial donation, please make your check out to: Cedar County Veterans Affairs or General Assistance.

Those donations can be mailed to the office at 400 Cedar Street, Tipton. If you have questions regarding this program or suggestions, please call 563-886-2170.
