Speaking Volumes: Want to check out a laptop? We’re going to try this idea
by Nick Shimmin, WB Public Library · Op-Ed · November 10, 2016

The West Branch Public Library is trying something new this year in the process of providing computer services.
We have often been asked about checking out laptops to take outside of the building, so we’re going to try it.

Now, the library has two Chromebook laptops to checkout for use outside the library.

The library’s Chromebooks do differ from the school’s should you be familiar with those (they are a different make and significantly larger). They do also require wireless internet access to use and, like everything else in the library, there’s no charge to check one out.

Since the Chromebooks can leave the library, we are limiting the checkout to ages 14 and up (the same as the age we have to get a library card without a parent). Of course, if needed, there’s no reason a parent can’t check out a Chromebook for a child to use!

Now, a few recent additions to our collection: (KEY: (B) = regular print book, (E) = ebook, (L) = large print, (A) = audio book)

Youth books: “The Courage of Cat Campbell” by Natasha Lowe; “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (illustrated) by JK Rowling; “The Loch Ness Punster” by Kate Klise; “Nannette’s Baguette” by Mo Willems; “We Found a Hat” by Jon Klassen;

Adult-level books: “A Life in Parts” (B) by Bryan Cranston; “A Baxter Family Christmas” (B) by Karen Kingsbury; “Killing the Rising Sun” (BEL) by Bill O’Reilly; “Small Great Things” (BELA) by Jodi Picoult; “The Magnolia Story” (B) by Chip and Joanna Gaines; “The Whistler” (BEL) by John Grisham

Movies: Bad Moms; Captain Fantastic; Ghostbusters (both new and old versions!); Star Trek: Beyond

Music: Hamilton: Original Broadway Cast Recording by Lin-Manuel Miranda
