West Branch played a scrimmage against the Mount Vernon Mustangs Friday night at Cornell College.
The Bears traveled northward to scrimmage against a team led by West Branch Head Coach Butch Pedersen’s son, Lance, in a warm-up to the season.
The Bears open the regular season Friday at West Liberty with the freshman-sophomore team starting at 5 p.m. and varsity scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
The Des Moines Register preseason rankings place West Branch at No. 4 in Class 1A, and fellow District 3 team Jesup at No. 9.
Those two teams meet in Week Three on Sept. 9 at Jesup.
The Gazette’s preseason poll places West Branch at No. 3 and Jesup at No. 3, with Regina again at No. 1.
Class 1A rival Regina is ranked No. 1 on both lists.
