Minor injuries to pedestrian
by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · August 25, 2016

West Branch Fire Department emergency responders treated Jim E. Detlefsen, age not available, of West Branch for minor injuries received about 10:25 a.m. Aug. 18 in the Jack & Jill grocery store parking lot at the corner of Main Street and Parkside Drive/First Street.

Detlefsen, who walks with the assistance of crutches, was passing through the parking lot when he was struck by a Ford F150 pickup truck, driven by Michael H. Johnston, 52, of West Branch, and knocked to the ground.

West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan said a passerby saw Detlefsen in the pickup truck’s blind spot and shouted for Johnston to stop, likely helping to avoid a more serious accident as Johnston said he did not realize his pickup struck someone.

The report said Johnston’s cell phone rang just about the time of the accident, though while he had the phone in his hand, he did not answer it.

No citations were issued. Detlefsen declined transport to a hospital for further treatment or evaluation.
