Velma May Stiff, 77, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at her home in West Liberty.

A gathering celebrating her life was Friday, July 29, 2016, in the Great Hall (lower level) of West Liberty United Methodist Church. Velma requested no services; in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Velma Stiff Memorial Fund. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Velma was born Oct. 19, 1938, in Cedar Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Dean and Oldys (Swalley) Stafford. She was a graduate of the last graduating class at Springdale High School in the Class of 1956. On March 23, 1958, she was united in marriage to M. Joe Stiff in Rochester, Iowa.

What Velma enjoyed most was being a wife, mother, and matriarch of her family. She also managed Stiff Cabins from 1976 until 1997, which included 20 cabins on the Cedar River. With her husband, she owned and operated Joe’s Trucking and Backhoe. More recently, Velma worked for the West Liberty Community School District’s lunch program. She was a tireless volunteer in the community, serving in many roles: Girl Scout Leader, West Liberty Recycling Program in its early years, Simpson Memorial Home BINGO and the RSVP Ride program in West Liberty. She attended church at the West Liberty United Methodist Church where she also served as a Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include her three daughters: Myrna Kirkpatrick and Tracy Peters, both of West Liberty, Iowa, and Kara Dennis of Morton, Ill.; one son, Aaron of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and her twin sister, Elma Woodcock of Littleton, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe, brother Donald Stafford and sister Mary Telsrow.
