She was born in Bozeman, Mont., the third child of seven, to Frank and Alverda Shriver in 1922. Betty went to Bozeman High School with Gary Cooper, before he was a famous movie star. She met her future husband, Mac, in Bozeman while he attended Montana State College. They met at a fraternity party and got married before Mac went into the Army in 1942. Betty, as she was better known, was married to Merritt (Mac) McCarty in Montana in 1942 and together raised three children, Michael, Patricia and Brad.

The family moved in 1958 to West Branch, where Betty raised her children until they were in secondary school, and then started working at the University of Iowa as a key punch operator.

She loved her children and grandchildren and was very proud of them all. Mac and Betty loved following their grandsons Sean and Chad McCarty in their athletic endeavors in high school and college, especially their golfing successes.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Pat, from Bozeman, Mont.; her brothers, Ray from Bozeman, Mont., and Dean from Arizona; five grandchildren: Sean (Mundi) McCarty from Solon, Iowa, Chad (Michelle) McCarty from North Liberty, Iowa, Matt (Charity) McCarty from Oregon, Mariah (Eli) McCarty-Patterson from Colorado, and Brittany (Adam) Cox from California; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the Solon Retirement Village for the kind and caring treatment they gave our mother and grandmother.
