Betty J. Petersen, 94, of West Liberty passed away Monday, May 16, 2016, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Liberty with visitation one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the West Branch Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Simpson Memorial Home Activities Dept. She was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Roselle G. and Mabel A. Goranson Ayers. On Dec. 21, 1940, she was united in marriage to Ernest Petersen at Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch.
She and her husband had owned the West Liberty Locker for 17 years and, prior to that, had operated the skating rink in West Liberty. Betty was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Liberty and a member of EZ Wheelers No. 210 Coachman camping club. She enjoyed camping and square dancing with the Hayshakers.
Survivors include three children, Bob (Sandra) Petersen of Atalissa, Barbara (Lyndon) Stratton of Leesburg, Fla., and Jim (Faye) Petersen of West Liberty; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Ernie.
