“Fifth disease” reported at Hoover
News · April 28, 2016

Parents received notice this past week that one confirmed case of Fifth disease was found at Hoover Elementary this past week.

School nurse Traci Hierseman-Fryauf sent the letter April 20, saying the disease is common at that age level and “rarely causes more side effects than a rash with a ‘slap cheek’ appearance with mild to no other symptoms.”

However, the disease can have more serious side effects in pregnant women and “anyone with a compromised immune system,” she wrote, encouraging such people to contact their health care provider.

According to information included with the letter, the virus-caused rash spreads to the trunk, arms and legs. “Most kids recover quickly and without complications,” read the information, from one to three weeks.

The infection is most contagious before the rash appears, it read, and frequent hand-washing and good hygiene can help keep it from spreading.
