Douglas Grove Miehe, 71, of West Liberty died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, at his home.

A memorial visitation was held Monday, Nov. 2, at Henderson Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. No funeral is planned. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to the West Liberty Fire and Rescue Department.

Doug was born July 6, 1944, in Cedar Rapids to Grover and Irene Vandeberg Miehe. He graduated from Lisbon High School and attended Iowa State University, where he met Virginia Burr. They were married in 1966 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in West Liberty.

Doug farmed for 44 years with his father-in-law, Lorren Burr, near West Liberty.

Motor sports were always his hobbies. In the 1970s and 80s he competed with a modified tractor in tractor pulls throughout the state. In the 80s and 90s he had a top alcohol dragster, engaging in NHRA races in the Midwest and Western United States. In more recent years, he turned to restoring classic ‘55 and ‘56 Chevys.

Doug is survived by his wife; son Van; daughter-in-law Cheri; two grandchildren, Devan and Kami of Kansas City, Mo.; brother Steve of Memphis; and mother-in-law Zelma Burr.

Preceding him in death were his parents, granddaughter Kylen, and father-in-law Lorren Burr.
