Congress may pass short-term budget to avoid shutdown News · October 01, 2015
As the Times went to press Tuesday, news out of Washington suggested Congress may pass a short-term budget and avoid a partial government shutdown that would also close the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum.
A shutdown would send home up to 36 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees at the two federal agencies with two or three kept on for security and minimal maintenance.
The National Park Service forwarded questions to the Office of Personnel Management, which issued a short statement:
“The Administration strongly believes that a lapse in appropriations should not occur. There is enough time for Congress to prevent a lapse in appropriations, and the Administration is willing to accept a clean, short-term continuing resolution to fund Government operations and allow Congress more time to negotiate an agreement that invests in middle-class economic priorities and helps our entire economy grow.
“However, at this time, prudent management requires that the government plan for the possibility of a lapse and OPM is working with (the Office of Management and Budget) to take appropriate action. This includes reviewing relevant legal requirements and updating our plan for executing an orderly shutdown. Determinations about specific programs are being actively reviewed.
“It is our hope that this work will ultimately be unnecessary and that there will be no lapse in appropriations.”
