Main Street grants up to $75K

Accredited and current Main Street Iowa communities, like West Branch, may apply for a new round of state funds for one challenge grant application per community.


Each community may make one grant application for $15,000 to $75,000 that would require a dollar-for-dollar match from the grantee.

Up to $925,000 will be awarded. Eligible projects include rehabilitation and/or restoration of privately held properties within the designated Main Street district. For example:

• Facade improvements (front, rear and side)

• Upper floor interior rehabilitation

• Structural repairs/improvements

• Energy efficiency/sustainability improvements

• First floor interior rehabilitation

• Site amenities (decks, patios, exterior spaces)

• Single specific phase of a larger rehab

Compatible New Construction including building additions with first floor commercial and upper floor(s) commercial or residential within the designated Main Street district. Razing to allow for new construction will not be considered eligible.

Grantee must show a minimum dollar-for-dollar cash match. No previous expenditures of any kind will be considered as suitable cash match.

Grantee must plan to be at the Oct. 12 awards presentation in Des Moines. Projects must be completed in 24 months and may not begin until mid November.

Local applications are due to the Main Street West Branch office by 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14. Main Street West Branch Board and state staff will review the applications and make a decision by Monday, Aug. 17. Full applications will be due to the State of Iowa by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11.
