Kenneth W. Conner, 88, died Thursday July 16th at his home in Cape Coral, Fla.

Ken was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in January 1927. He enlisted in the Navy at the start of World War II and served proudly as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the USS Rowan, participating in the search for POW survivors just days after the atomic bombings of both Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan. Ken was a longtime resident of Springdale, Iowa, owner of Conner Decorating Co., and for a time also owned and operated a paint and supply store in West Branch. He continued his painting business after moving to Fort Myers, Fla., in 1971, and continued painting until just a few years ago.

Ken and his wife, Helen, raised a family of three boys and three girls. His surviving family includes sons Mark and wife Janice of Monroe, Wash., David and Vanessa of Cape Coral, and Patrick and wife Kaye of North Fort Myers, Fla.; daughters Frances of Cape Coral, Fla., Peggy (Bartenhagen) and husband Mitch of Grandview, Iowa, and Shaun (Babcock) and husband Denny of Blowing Rock, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Kenny’s sons and daughters plan on getting together at a later date for a memorial to celebrate his life.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Joyce Lynn, and his wife, Helen.
