News · July 02, 2015

Ten members of the West Branch FFA Chapter attended State FFA Convention Mar. 19-21.

Members participated in sessions, packed Meals from the Heartland, took tours, attended the career expo, and participated in Career Development Events.

All 10 members participated in packaging Meals from the Heartland, a program that has been offered for four years at State FFA Convention.

This year Iowa FFA was able to package its millionth meal.

Members of the Biotechnology CDE included: Emma Wright, Tanner Lodge, and Eric Heick. The event was made up of three parts: biotechnology equipment identification, a knowledge test, and a team practicum. The team placed 10th overall, receiving a gold rating. Emma Wright received top individual honors in the identification portion of the event, receiving a plaque.

Members who participated in the Greenhand Quiz contest were Ethan Fetzer and Emma Fryauf. Each member answered 100 FFA knowledge questions, ranging from history of the organization to identifying current officers and even parliamentary procedure questions. Ethan received a gold rating, and Emma received silver.

Tours were offered during convention and West Branch participated in a tour of the Meat Science Lab at Iowa State University where students learned about meat processing and quality assurance. Two members also attended a tour of the Iowa State University horse farm, where they saw facilities and horses, including the youngest grandson of the famous racehorse Secretariat.

John Krall and Dan Beuter served as voting delegates during the business session, where they cast their votes for the 2015-2016 State FFA Officers. Nick Madsen participated in the annual “Massing of the Flags” grand march during the opening session on Tuesday. Tanner Lodge was able to walk across the stage during the first general session on Monday to receive the chapter’s “Ambassador Program” award from the Iowa FFA Foundation.

Middle school members Emily Harold and Brett Schiele attended a middle school workshop on Tuesday as well.

During the workshop students learned about communication skills and got to know fellow middle school FFA members.

Emma Wright and Delaney Rife received their Iowa FFA Degrees this year. Both members completed an application earlier in the year and submitted it for approval. This award is a high honor for these girls.

Unfortunately, Delaney was not able to make it to convention to walk across the stage due to an illness.

Emma received her degree pin and certificate during the fourth general session on Tuesday.
