Saylor named a Junior Miss Iowa finalist
News · July 02, 2015

On June 13, Summer Saylor of West Branch represented Cedar County as Junior Miss Cedar County in the Junior Miss Iowa Competition at the Central Performing Arts Center in DeWitt.

She was one of five finalists in the competition, and won the “Spirit Award” which was a $50 scholarship.

“I had a great time!” Summer said with a big smile on her face. “The most challenging part was the on-stage question, but the whole pageant was really fun and I met a lot of great girls!”

The competition included an opening dance number, an interview, modeling a trendy outfit, a formal dress, the onstage question, and a talent competition. Summer’s talent was Irish Dance to an Irish Folk Song “The Boys of the Town.”

The three days leading up to the competition the girls rehearsed for the pageant, attended a party and participated in many community service projects; they made blankets and donated books for the children’s hospital and volunteered at the Family Museum in Bettendorf. They also attended the Miss Iowa Preliminaries on Thursday and Friday night in Davenport.

Each girl must also have a completed or an ongoing community service project to participate in the pageant. They must write an essay about it and discuss it in their interview. For Summer’s community service project she is raising money to buy and install a Buddy Bench for the West Branch Elementary.
