White among school resignations

When the West Branch School Board at its June 8 meeting came to the part where they vote on personnel, Board President Kathy Knoop looked under “resignations” and jokingly moved to approve all of them “except Sue.”

Of the four resignations presented to the board, one was Susan “Sue” White, a longtime teacher who is moving to Wichita, Kan., due to “an opportunity for my family.” She leaves her position teaching second grade.

“(This opportunity) is the only reason I would ever leave such a great work environment,” White wrote in her letter to the board. “Thank you so much for the continued support that allowed me to grow so much as a teacher and a learner throughout my tenure at the Hoover Elementary. I wish the entire school community every success with their future endeavors.”

Knoop called White’s leaving a “great loss.”

“She’s given so much,” the board president said, offering well-wishes to White. “She’s such a leader.”

Board member Deb Schreiber said White will be “tough to replace.”

Elementary Principal Jess Burger agreed, saying, “She certainly is.”

The board approved a list of personnel items, including hirings, extra-duty contracts and resignations.

Contracts were awarded to: Madison Kaalberg as high school assistant softball coach; Michelle Cater as business education teacher; Christopher Copeland as middle school band instructor; Alicia Salger as elementary reading and math support teacher; and Laura Helderman as middle school special education teacher.

Two extra-duty assignments were granted to Shelby King, one as middle school track coach and the second as seventh-grade girls basketball coach.

In addition to White, the board approved three other resignations: Alyssa Jacobson as high school winter cheerleading coach; Anne Hahn as elementary associate; and Cindy Gonzalez as high school Spanish teacher and English Language Learner instructor.
