Letter: Watch: Blooms open in less than a minute
Op-Ed · June 18, 2015

It is my pleasure to call to your attention one of the many wonders of nature right here on Main Street in West Branch.

In the front of our Friends Church on North Downey is a flower garden seemingly dominated by lilies, however among the lilies and fighting for position is this awesome plant.

We have two vigorous and interesting Evening Primrose.

Driving by at 4 p.m., you might see some wilted blooms just ready to drop. Come back just before dark, around 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., and watch the show. The plants bloom every evening.

Drive up along the west curb and look for the yellow blooms. If you’re too late, enjoy the beautiful new blooms, but if you’re too early, be patient, sit, watch and meditate like we Quakers would do and “wait, I think I saw something move. That bud, it’s starting to open.”

These buds, which are somewhat torpedo-shaped, miraculously open and release their blooms in a minute or less, so one can observe nature in action.

Sometimes three or four may be opening at once!

Stay a little longer and a Phoenix moth or two might show up to check the flowers for nectar. I am sure you will be impressed.

This show continues throughout the summer if not attacked by drought, insects or the always-present human beings.

Enjoy,

Roscoe Millett
