“The Simple Gift of Walnut Grove,” a short film produced by the Museum of Danish America with filmmaker John Richard, will be shown in the Figge Auditorium at the Hoover Presidential Library-Museum on Sunday, April 26 at 1:15 and 2:15 PM.

“Simple Gift” is about the Danish-American experience in the early 20th century through the eyes of Walter Hansen of rural West Branch. His father, Hans Hansen, was a Danish immigrant who came to Iowa from Denmark in 1899 and built a farmstead out of native timber.

“The farm and its working sawmill have been lovingly maintained and preserved by Walter and his family,” read a library press release. “It is a stunning place to be, far from the hurry of modern life and, in many ways, untouched from what it was 100 years ago. The film covers all seasons of life on the farm and is of breathtaking quality.”

After two years of filming, it won the grand prize at the 11th annual Siouxland Film Festival in Sioux City in February and features music by The Danish String Quartet and Victor Borge.

Refreshments between the two showings feature Danish kringle pastries from Elk Horn. Admission is free.
