Prefer calling 911, or texting?

Cedar County E911 officials said April 9 that texting may be added within a year.

Brad Ratliff, assistant coordinator for Emergency 911, said that service will be “up and running” for most of the county within two weeks except for West Branch and Durant since part of each city lies in another county.

West Branch is partly in Johnson County, and Durant is partly in Scott County.

“That’s not ready to go and probably won’t be for a year,” E911 Coordinator Tim Malott added.

Ratliff doubts many people will use it, though.

“In Houston, it only gets used 10 or 20 times a year,” he said.

Still, he would like to offer it in Cedar County, but notes that only some of the major cell phone companies — like iWireless, Verizon and Sprint — have signed on.
