Verlee Jean Hunter, 82, Green Valley, Ariz.

Verlee Jean Hunter passed away Jan. 9, 2015, from complications after having a stroke.

She and her husband, Bob, have lived in Green Valley, Ariz., since 2004.

She was born to Magnus and Gladys (Jensen) Sondergard on Sept. 5, 1932, and graduated from West Branch High School in 1950. In her senior year, she was the homecoming queen.

Verlee and Bob were married on Aug. 31, 1952, in West Branch.

Verlee attended Iowa State College for two years, studying home economics, and later attended Pacific Lutheran University in the nursing program in Tacoma, Wash.

Being a military family, they have lived in many different places, including Germany, Panama and Alaska. While in Anchorage, Verlee was employed at Providence Hospital for several years, then at Our Lady of Compassion Care Facility.

After retirement, she was a hands-on working partner in building their home on the banks of the Kenai River near Soldotna, Alaska.

Survivors are her husband of 63 years, Bob; two daughters, Deidre (Phil Massey); granddaughter Rita of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter Kim of Eagle River, Alaska; sister Anita (Bob) Frost of Joplin, Mo.
