Council accepts bridge grant
News · January 22, 2015

The West Branch City Council on Jan. 14 formally accepted a grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation to help rebuild the College Street bridge.

The city estimates the bridge will cost about $1.35 million, including construction, design engineering, construction engineering and acquiring right-of-ways in an attempt to straighten out the road on either side, according to a Jan. 15 letter signed by Mayor Mark Worrell.

An attachment to the letter, sent to the IDOT, estimates preliminary engineering costs of $125,000, right-of-way acquisition costs of $110,000, construction engineering of $165,000, and construction costs of $950,000.

The grant pays 80 percent or up to $1 million of the project. If the $1.35 million estimate is correct, 80 percent equals $1.08 million, so the city will likely max out the grant and get $1 million toward the project. And the city will have to raise $350,000 to pay for the remainder of the cost.

The current bridge is 24.3 feet wide, was built in 1940 and reconstructed on the original pilings in 1985, City Administrator Matt Muckler said. The city plans to replace it with a bridge that is 40 feet wide with a 10-foot-wide pedestrian bridge, making it 50 feet wide altogether.

The city has three years to bid the project, which could mean construction within four years.
