Legion hosts regional speech contest

Durant sophomore Autumn Wolf won the top prize Sunday at the district-level Constitutional Speech Contest, hosted by the West Branch American Legion.
Wolf's prepared speech, entitled, "Women In Their Place," talked about how women earned the right to vote with the 19th Amendment and the effort leading up to its final passage in 1920.

In the tightly controlled contest, competitors are not allowed notes or prompts, waiting competitors must be in a soundproof room, no photographs are allowed during speeches, and all cell phones must be shut off.

Each contestant gives a prepared speech, then has five minutes to prepare on an assigned topic chosen at the event.

Wolf was the only contestant from the district, taking home a $200 scholarship and a medal, as well as an invitation to the area contest, the last level before the state competition.

West Branch's Legion post was selected to host this year's contest, which was held at Bethany Lutheran Church.
