Martha Jean Nichols, 95, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

Visitation was held at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015. Services were held at the United Methodist Church in West Liberty, Friday, Jan. 2. Interment was at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. Memorials may be made to United Methodist Women, or the activities fund at Simpson Memorial Home/Heath Manor. Martha Jean was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Cranston, Iowa, the daughter of W. Ernest and Effie Shires Meeker. She was a graduate of Muscatine High School and Iowa State Teachers College, now University of Northern Iowa. She taught one year in Columbus Junction before accepting a job with the Muscatine Community School District where she taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grades for 41 years, all at Jefferson Elementary School.

On Aug. 27, 1950, she was united in marriage to Donald S. Nichols in Cranston Iowa. She and Donald resided southwest of West Liberty, where they farmed.

She was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church, and an active member of UMW. Following retirement, she enjoyed baking, making decorated cakes and overseeing meal preparations at the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her two children: Carolyn (Tom) Probst of West Liberty and Tim (Kris) Nichols of Nichols; and five grandchildren: Emily and Ben Probst and Merideth, Morgan and Jacob Nichols.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Geraldine Schomberg and brother Joseph Meeker.
