Jack Clair Smithers, 83, of West Liberty died Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Windmill Manor in Coralville.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty, where a prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. Burial will be 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at the Preston Cemetery in Preston, Iowa.

Jack was born July 27, 1931, in Dunlap, Iowa, the son of Sylvester and Velma Terrell Smithers. He was active in the U.S. Marine Corp as a Private First Class serving in the Korean War. On March 15, 1974, he was united in marriage to Joan Steines in Clinton, Iowa.

He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad after a long career. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. He also enjoyed fishing and following horse races.

He is survived by his wife: Joan Smithers, Coralville, Iowa; stepchildren: Monica (Larry) Shields of West Liberty, Iowa, Floyd (Renee) Steines of Clinton, Iowa, Agnes (Terry) Meeker of Higginsville, Mo., and James (Allyson) Steines of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; special step-granddaughter Rachel (Oscar) Trinidad of Iowa City, Iowa; stepgrandchildren: Mark Shields, Brian (Jamie) Shields, Ryan Steines, Kevin (Heather) Steines, Teresa (Kyle) Keller, Ashley (Daniel) Brown, Coleman Steines and Claire Steines; step-great-grandchildren: Eleanor Steines, Harrison Shields and Kayden Keller.

He was preceded in death by step-daughter Angela Sager; parents; siblings; and brothers-in-law Orville Bormann and Alfred Tebbe, Jr.
