Power out at Hoover Complex
News · September 18, 2014

A loud "pop" near the intersection of Main and Poplar streets about 8:30 a.m. Friday knocked out power to the Hoover Library-Museum and National Historic Site for more than 7 1/2 hours.

Alliant Energy first checked the pole by Main and Poplar, but determined the problem was underground and had to dig near Wetherell Street on park property.

The power was restored about 3:40 p.m. though Library-Museum Director Thomas Schwartz said that his facility's systems "were not fully operational until about 4:10 p.m."

While the park is mostly outdoors, the Library-Museum had to use backup lighting systems to keep the galleries and restrooms going and could only sell gift shop items to customers using cash.

Schwartz said extra staff were placed to the farthest sections of the galleries just in case of fire.
