IHSAA commends WBHS for 2013-14

Neither referees nor umpires ejected a single West Branch athlete or coach during the 2013-14 school year, prompting a letter of commendation from the Iowa High School Athletic Assoc., the school district announced.

The Aug. 20 letter states that West Branch Community School District is among 178 Iowa schools — or 47.7 percent of IHSAA members — to acquire that achievement.

"So many times we dwell on the negative, but this is an opportunity for me to convey to you from (the IHSAA) that you should take pride in notifying your coaches and your athletes how proud you are of their overall conduct," IHSAA Executive Director Rick Wulkow wrote. "We continue to see better conduct from our coaches and our athletes every year. I wish I could say the same for our spectator conduct."

Wulkow said he understands ejections are often a response to "an emotional outburst" and that the individual involved is "is very sorry for what has occurred."

"But to go through an entire year and not have one flagrant, unsportsmanlike act during any of your competitions is certainly something to be proud of."
