Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Larson, 92, of Fairfield passed away peacefully on Aug. 27, 2014, at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Branch, Iowa, where she had resided for a number of months.

Elizabeth was born Jan. 5, 1922, near Martelle, Iowa. She was the only child of Merle and Erma Leinbaugh Murfield.

Following graduation from high school in 1939, she enrolled at Iowa State College in Ames where she received a bachelor of science degree in Home Economics Education in 1943. She then moved to Jefferson County where she taught home economics in the Fairfield High School for a number of years.

Beth met Kenneth L. Larson while singing in the chancel choir at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield. The couple married on Sept. 18, 1948 in Martelle, Iowa. She remained active in the church where she served as a trustee and a member of the United Methodist Women. Elizabeth was also a long-time member of Chapter C, P.E.O., AAUW, Farm Bureau Women and the Jefferson County Republican Central Committee.

Beth enjoyed her family, reading, art, gardening, traveling and cooking. She often served as a judge of 4-H entries at local county fairs.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Kenneth, who passed away on Oct. 8, 1995.

She is survived by her three children: Nancy (Jeff) Lathrop of West Branch, Iowa, Thomas E. Larson of Urbandale, Iowa, and James (Jodie) Larson of Chicago, Ill.; as well as three grandchildren: Ellen Larson, Kenneth Larson and Kate Larson.

The family received friends at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield on Saturday. A graveside service was held Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery with Pastor Todd Holman officiating. The family invited family and friends to join them at the fellowship hall at the First United Methodist Church following the service at the cemetery.

Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
