Geraldine was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Frederick T. and Nina E. Smith Green. She was the youngest of five children.

She had worked as “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II in Rockford, Ill. Her fiancé, Bob enlisted in the Marines and was shipped out, to be stationed in California. She traveled by train to meet him, and on Dec. 31, 1942, she was united in marriage to Robert H. “Bob” Hillyer at Oceanside, Calif. She returned shortly after. Jerry worked with Bob at Hawkeye Lumber Company for many years and retired from the University of Iowa after 17 years of service in 1997. She was a member of the Nichols Christian Church. She was a hard worker and enjoyed taking care of people, but her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother to her grandchildren.

Bob and Jerry had four children. She is survived by Roy (Ella) Hillyer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Kathy (Charlie) Willier of Nichols, Linda (Jeff) Achenbach of Maiden, N.C.; daughter-in-law Marsha Elder of Nichols; 12 grandchildren: Jamey Hillyer, Jim Hillyer, Jacob, Christopher, Alexander Hillyer, Erin (Tyler) Jacobsen, Betsy and Robert Achenbach, Dustin (Jenny) Stagg, Cheryl (Chris) Doehrmann, Barry (Jody) Willier and Marcy Naber; 14 great-grandchildren: Danielle Hillyer, Jon and Lizzie Hora, Paige, Jaden Geraldine, Trenton Doehrmann, Dustin Jr, Alyssa, Seth Stagg, Megan, Emily, Logan Willier, Olivia and Lincoln Naber; one great-great-granddaughter, Mayah Lamb; and several nieces and nephews.
