Samuel Enos Rathmel, 81, Knoxville

Samuel Enos Rathmel was born March 30, 1933, in Washington County, Iowa, the son of Frank and Nora (Hole) Rathmel.

He was raised in the Washington and Iowa City areas. As a young man, Sam worked as a farmer. On May 31, 1966, he was united in marriage to Coramarie Parker in Diamond City, Ark. Sam worked for the University of Iowa Hospital Carpenter Shop and owned his own carpentry business for many years. In 1983, the couple moved to Knoxville and Sam owned and operated the Gambles Store. He spent most of his life as a carpenter, building and remodeling many homes. Sam had also worked as a special Deputy for the Johnson County Sheriff and as a jailer for the Marion County Sheriff.

Sam passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at the Griffin Nursing Center at the age of 81 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Cheryl and sister Freda Enfield.

Those surviving Sam are wife Cora of Knoxville; children: Jerry Rathmel of Knoxville, Gary (Ann) Rathmel of Las Cruces, N.M., and Cynthia Hall of Anchorage, Alaska; sister Rita of Versailles, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

The Memorial Service for Samuel Rathmel was Monday, June 30, 2014, at at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. A time of food and fellowship followed the service at the First United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Iowa, at a later date. Memorials have been established for the First United Methodist Church and the HCI Care Services. Bybee & Davis Funeral Home is handling arrangements and online condolences may be left at BertrandFuneralHomes.com.
