Verizon tower goes up
News · April 24, 2014

Workers with Muti of Champaign, Ill., constructed a 197-foot tower Friday afternoon at 213 Northridge Drive, just west of North Fourth Street.

Central States Tower II, LLC, had the tower constructed to boost service for Verizon Wireless customers.

According to the Federal Communications Commission, the new tower will replace a nearly 160 feet tall tower nearby that was built in March 2005.

Verizon spokesperson Brenda Hill said the new, 4G LTE tower will be "turned on" sometime this year, but could not be more specific because of the steps necessary to install the equipment and switch over from the old tower.

City Administrator Matt Muckler said Central States estimated the tower would cost about $125,000 to construct.
