Shoe recycling
News · April 17, 2014

West Branch's McKenna Sexton, a student at Mount Mercy, is heading up a drive to collect at least 500 pairs of shoes for Nike ReUse-A-Shoe, which recycles shoes into sports playing surfaces.

Sexton is working with schoolmates Amanda Mayonette, who is in charge of marketing, and Erica Soppe, who designed posters.

Donation sites were first spread around Cedar Rapids, and now include Shear Creations in West Branch and Running Wild in both Coralville and Iowa City. The deadline is April 21 or until they collect 500 pairs, whichever comes second.

The idea came from a paper she wrote her freshman year about energy efficiency.

"I decided to go ahead with the project because I realize how many shoes just get thrown away," Sexton said, and this area can get many people involved, even if they are only donating one pair. "One pair of shoes does make a difference."
